Historical origins
Molecular biology research in La Plata in 1962, within the Chairs of Biological Chemistry of the then Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy of UNLP, formed the initial core from which today’s IBBM developed.
Creation and evolution
- 1962
Initial core in UNLP Biological Chemistry chairs, with the founding group led by Dr. Gabriel Favelukes and the early incorporation of Dr. Oscar Grau.
- 1991
UNLP created the Institute of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, under the Department of Biological Sciences of the Faculty of Exact Sciences (FCE).
- 2007
Incorporation into the CONICET Institutes and Centres system as a dual-dependency unit with UNLP, under the name Institute of Biotechnology and Molecular Biology.
Dual CONICET–UNLP dependency
Since 2007 IBBM has been part of the CONICET–UNLP institute system. This institutional condition shapes its governance, its link with the Faculty of Exact Sciences, and its role in the national science system.
Undergraduate and graduate training
Consistent with its history, the Institute maintains a commitment to undergraduate and graduate teaching, with active participation in FCE programmes related to biotechnology. It also offers training courses and technical advice.
